Episode two: Beat it or I’ll beat you...
Staring at the clear blue Namibian sky , the wind caressing her skin like the touch of a gentle lover, Angie remembered that day 5 years ago so clearly. It always felt like yesterday. Her son had been taken from her, her pains and suffering had been in vain. The feeling of emptiness still haunted her dreams and tormented her every waking moment of her existence.
Her family, or so they called themselves to her, had mysteriously gotten money and they had taken her back. They said they had pitied her enormously after throwing her out for being pregnant, or at least that was how it seemed before she turned her back. Her aunt had never liked her as a child, even when her parents had been alive it was visible. The unfortunate thing was that she had no other family after they died, no one had been willing to take her in after their collision with that forsaken drunk driver. The children treated her no different, fuelled by the same jealousy their mother possessed, Angie did not let this make her like her mother. Angie’s character was strong and almost inpenetratable.
She had received a sound education and didn’t even have to get loans from the government like many. They gladly paid her fees, with mysterious smiles and pleasantries. Now a year after her honours degree in English from the Polytechnic of Namibia, she decided she wanted to open her own magazine. The idea was just that for now, an idea.
“Hey...” A voice interrupted her thoughts. She hated that, it was those who always talked with ones mouth fully open. Disgusting. Without opening her eyes, “Yes, how may I help you?” “Actually I wanted to talk to you, if you don’t mind.” “Listen, I know this is the Parliament’s Garden and people who come here socialise and such, but I am really not interested. So beat it now or I’ll beat you.” “It’s about Joshua.” The name had her heart beating so fast, immediately her palms became moist and her forehead creased. Her eyes focused on the figure before her intently. She could have killed him with her stare. “Speak.” He shivered and then sat himself down on the joyful green grass next to her. “I don’t know where to start.” “The offer to beat you is still on so don’t waste my time and speak!” “He’s alive and I know where he is.” Angie got on her knees as he spoke, “Where is he? Who has him? How did you find me? Who are you?” “She told me to get you. He treats them worse than he treated you. He’s full of hate. He’s a monster.” “Who? Tell me! Who’s he? Who’s she?” Angie held onto his arm, shaking him. Nothing helped he was lost in his trance like state.
“Hey!” They both heard a voice way behind them. As they were looking towards the descending stairs of the main entrance, they spotted a man dressed in a black suit with black glasses on. He gestured towards them and immediately started running for them. “I don’t think that guy wants to talk.” She pulled the young man up to his feet and they ran as fast as they could, headed directly into Town Square. It was lunch time, they might lose him in the crowd. He chased them down right into Wernhill Park. Angie turned back to see that he was no longer behind her. The crowd had swallowed her, she was sure he wouldn’t find her. The young man she ran with was also nowhere to be found.
Back to the news he gave her, her son was alive. Judging by the news he wasn’t in the best state. She had to rescue him, but how? Walking towards the Wernhill parking lot, she dug her keys out of her back pocket, breathing heavily. She whispered to herself, “I’m coming for you, Joshua...”
