Building a Brand: Selma Moongo

Name and surname: Selma Moongo

Age: 23

Occupation: (and where?) Public Relations & Media Officer, at Oxygen Communications

What are some of your hobbies? My hobbies include reading, swimming and working out.

If you retired tomorrow and wanted to start a wildly different second career, what would you do? I'd probably venture into business, event management business to be precise. It fascinates me that one is not entirely entitled to be in the office at all times, the working hours are flexible and income can be at any time. I find the unpredictability amazing as when seasons seems to be dry, one is pushed to dig deeper and find the next source of income - you are able to challenge and push yourself.

Where is your favorite place to visit? In Namibia, it would definitely have to be Soussusvlei because the whole idea of having a resort/loge in the middle of the dessert is beyond wow. Beyond the borders, I am a bit stuck on two places at (Never been there but, they are already my favourite to visit) two different sides of the world. Santorini in Greece, there is so much culture and beauty in their people and infrastructure. The second would be the Caribbean island Barbados. The people, the ocean, the accent, Rihanna. I mean, Rihanna!

Describe a personal hero of yours. Cliché but true - my mom. This is a woman of strength, courage and a strong spiritual belief in the Lord. My mom has defeated Cancer more than once and that alone is what makes me look at her in admiration, love and appreciation to still have her around.

Are you a morning person or a night owl? I am without a doubt a morning person. I wake up cheerful and I tend to have music in the background when I get ready for work. In the evening, I simply take a shower, eat and go straight to bed.. I don't play with my sleep hours for nothing!

What’s next for you in your work?  What are you looking forward to before the end of this year? For this year I am really just looking at networking as much as possible because my mom would always say it doesn't help if you know someone in an organization or business environment if they don't know you - make yourself known amongst the right people and make your name a brand name.

What is your greatest motivation? The greatest one has to be the young people around me that are doing well career wise. This is so because I myself am a young individual in society who graduated not so long ago so I know and see the struggles of even finding yourself in a pool full of already established individuals. I find it quite motivating if at least one of us can 'defy' the typical stereotype odds of swimming in a tank with the big fish.

If you are to point out one of your flaws, which one would it be and why? Over caring (if that's even a thing) - I am strong advocate for consideration of people's feelings especially in a work environment because there are different people from different backgrounds and a lot of emotions tend to erupt from a mere miscommunication. I end up taking on other people's hurt and trying to fix things knowing very well an environment can never adjust to an individual but rather an individual to an environment.

What is your greatest quality? My hunger to learn. In any environment im in, I want to learn something. Even in fields that have nothing to do with mine (PR), I want to learn something. I find it as an attractive trait to have when you can engage in many conversations and  have meaningful discussions there under.

Any closing words: Thank you for having me :)
