How to Start a Podcast for Absolute Beginners

Thinking about starting a podcast? That’s awesome! Before you dive in, there are a few key questions to ask yourself:

  • Why am I doing this?
  • Do I have enough to say?
  • How long do I want to keep it going?
  • Is this a priority?
  • How will I sustain it?
  • What’s my plan to make it happen?

These questions are crucial because starting something you can’t sustain is a recipe for frustration. Remember, this is your project, and its success is entirely in your hands.

Posting and Content

How often will you post? Once a week? Every two weeks? Consistency is key. Think about your content: What are you passionate about? Do you know enough about the topic, or are you willing to research? Will you do interviews, discussions, or solo episodes?

Your audience cares about two things: consistency and authenticity. In other words, what value are you offering? Are you making them think deeper, entertaining them, offering new information, or sharing useful tips? Your content should always aim to provide value.

Establishing Your Expertise

No one’s opinion is universal, so always be clear when you’re sharing your perspective. If you’re discussing facts, back them up with research to build credibility. Your goal is to be known as an expert in your field—even if that field is just you!

Here’s a quick exercise: Write down 20 topics you want to cover on your podcast. Each topic should be something you’re passionate about because if it’s important to you, it’ll resonate with your audience too. This list will not only keep you organized but also ensure you always have content ready to go.

Social Media Strategy

Planning your social media strategy is just as important as creating content. How will you promote your podcast? Remember, no one can promote you better than you can. Consistent social media engagement is crucial, so think about how you’ll keep your audience engaged and informed.

Naming Your Podcast

Got a name for your podcast yet? It should be something simple, memorable, and reflective of your content. The name is just the start—what really matters is the substance behind it.

Recording Your Trailer

Your trailer is your 59-second pitch. Use it to introduce yourself and give listeners a taste of what to expect. Be enthusiastic and engaging—make them excited to hear more!

Creating Cover Art

You can design your cover art using free tools like Canva or directly in the Anchor app. Your cover art is the first thing people will see, so make it eye-catching and reflective of your podcast’s vibe.

So, what’s next? Come up with a name, create your cover art, and record your trailer. Then, you’re ready to start podcasting!
