Blogging 101

When you are starting a blog, most people will say you have to have a niche and then just stick to it, which is great advice, but most people do not even know what their niche is by the time they want to start a blog.

My advice is to just write.
  • Just write about things that you are really and genuinely interested in.
  • Write about things that you have a lot to say about.
  • Write about topics that move you and challenge you.
  • Write about topics that you have done research about and share your opinions/questions/ thoughts on it

Think of your blog posts, not only as statements but as the door to starting a conversation on that particular topic and it can be anything.

Make sure that each blog post is insightful, helpful/informative and of course, easy to understand (write in a way your target audience can understand you.)

If it's a personal blog (of which most are), put yourself into it by giving a story related to the topic or be objective and share your views and leave questions for readers to ponder and engage. It doesn’t matter if you are writing about something that others are writing about, we haven’t heard it like you are saying it and that’s the magic. You are all the difference that topic needs, be authentic, be honest and be you. That’s the key ingredient for originality.

It’s important to avoid spelling errors, use proper punctuation and apply basic grammar rules. ( use Grammarly  or get a proofreader)

Consistency is key, so try to post at least once a week (this is the least amount of posts but it can be as effective as can be.)

Monetization is basically turning your credibility into cash, and that’s not an easy thing to do.

The quality of your brand is important when approaching companies. I advise that you approach companies with a solid proposal when you:
  • Have posted 50 - 100 posts consistently

Don’t be shy or discouraged, send out your proposal to as many companies as possible. Take a leap of faith and put yourself out there, out of 100 applications you send out 2 yeses can change everything for you, but if you don’t send out as many as possible you limit your chances of getting that yes that changes everything.

Include your analytics in your proposal to show your following and how much your audience engage with you. Hopefully, you are the kind of blogger/creator who responds to each and every single question and comment which ultimately increases the amount of engagement you will receive overall.

When you are pitching to your potential collaborators talk about how you can help them and not how they can help you. Let them understand that you are more likely to work for them than them for you, by pushing their product/service forward.

Don’t be lazy tailor each proposal to the company you are sending it to. Do your research and make sure to send it to the right person in the right department.

Sign deals that you can honestly sell/promote on your blog, it’s important to not just take deals for the money. Faking it till you make it will not work if you sell products that are cheap and lack quality. Don’t get sloppy and ruin your credibility over money.

Be about what you believe in.
